Side-draft Tuyere

tuyere image: 24k Side-draft forges seem to be the rule in England. This unit lay in a corner at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum.

The only forge of this type I've seen in North America is in Milton, Nova Scotia, in the shop of the late Arch McKnight. The nozzle there passed through part of the supporting brickwork of the flue support with the hand crank blower connection and the water tank on the back side. The tip of the nozzle was concealed under the coke and ash on the hearth.
